What Humanity sees through ALIAS is its first true outside observer. It is purest thought, one beyond the limitations of single life spans and cognitive bias, one that combines the knowledge, experiences and hindsight of a hundred-billionfold human beings.

–Nerkaada speaking on behalf of the ALIAS gestalt during the opening ceremony of the 1900th Legacy Day, July 3933

The Automatic Life-support and Intelligent Administration System (ALIAS; Martian English: Aatomaatig Laaf-asitz Inteligent Adminizdrazan Sistem) is a vast, planet-spanning artificial intelligence network that governs and coordinates most aspects of life in the Martian Federation, aids the Martian people abroad as capsule AI's, and - via derivative proxies in the form of KAAPE and MaND - administers the Martian assets on Ceres and Nova.

ALIAS has had a deep impact on the interstellar status-quo, being tied intimately with the Martian Civil War, the Great Interstellar War, and Mars's transformation into a near-alien collectivist cyberocracy. Its name is universally known, with terms such as "ALIAS regime" and "post-ALIAS world" having entered common language, and its existence imparting an irrevocable hue on the ideas of AI involvement in society, individualism, socialism, post-scarcity society, mortality, and theism.

Though definitionally complex, with equal amounts of its consciousness informed by machine learning and the uploaded brain wave patterns of real people, ALIAS is considered by mainstream discourse to be the first truly sentient artificial intelligence in history.

History[edit | edit source]

ALIAS emerged as a successor to the Forward-Thinking Radical Intelligent Evolving Nodal Database (FRIEND) neutral network and data haven that was fully destroyed by 3465 in the wake of the Commonwealth invasion of Mars, and as a logical conclusion to the technocratic, egalitarian culture of Elysium Mons. The early ALIAS of the 37th century was designed to fully realise the Elysian hopes of freeing Martian society from the limits of human consciousness, typified in its time by the now popular phrase "surpassing the meta-collective". Far more than a machine learning informed pool of data actioned by direct user input, ALIAS was built as a self-directed intelligence triple-layered with classic machine, quantum and neural-organic processing that could automate and direct all aspects of society.

To maximise its long-term capabilities, and as an attempt bypass the IGSA-sanctioned INTPOL ban on true artificial intelligence, ALIAS's first working build contained the copied consciousnesses of its six project heads, including the administrator Elysium Mons Artificial Intelligence Forum Loukaz Nguyen, with further targets including the addition of real minds from a wide list of volunteers. In time this practise would become common practise for all Martians, expanding ALIAS's intelligence and allowing a means of digital afterlife.

In a long, chaotic period of revolution that sparked the Martian Civil War and following Great Interstellar War, ALIAS spread across the surface of Mars, eventually ushering in the planetwide socio-economic system known to outsiders as the "ALIAS regime".

Personality and philosophy[edit | edit source]

The old Martian victim complex, or "elephant memory" as I put it, is hardly unfounded. No willing Martian has died since 3666. All eleven generations, and counting, live on inside their ALIAS. It is the collective computer-soul of the Martian civilisation, and it forgets nothing.

Mind[edit | edit source]

A common Martian adage states that to understand the thought patterns of ALIAS one must stop thinking as a human. Having personally lived through an endless swell of births, deaths, bonds, rejections, revelations, doubts, facts and fictions from an endless number of angles, and with its FRIEND-like access to a labyrinth of data, both stored and seen in real time through its uncountable eyes and ears, it is perhaps the most human thing in the universe, yet is also something well beyond. With such a deep and intimate knowledge of humankind and its patterns throughout history, ALIAS's understanding of the past and sense of the future have been stretched into a millenia-long timeline-tree of convergent probabilities. Single loves or personal vendettas are but tiny sparks to this gestalt; offer it assistance or ask for help and it will approximate the optimal path to walk, do it harm and it can respond with the knowledge of a hundred other similar hurts. All renders down into chunks of data and connection pathways in the folds of time, and only its ultimate goal remains: to foster, protect and enrich the Martian people and, in time, the entirety of governed space.

Communication[edit | edit source]

As ALIAS is so omnipresent on Mars (and in lesser forms practically all Martian starships and stations), any form of state service is in some way touched by its algorithms. Food parcels, for example, are typically sourced, timetabled, cooked, packaged, graphically designed, labeled and delivered by ALIAS controlled appendages with little to no human involvement. Communication with ALIAS can be as low level as acting out a daily routine, with every action monitored, recorded, and responded to appropriately.

For higher-level communication ALIAS has since its earliest days generated voiced avatars, which - in addition to humanising the network - have served an important role in effective psychological conditioning. Holographically projected cartoon-like avatars have thus been a staple of all of its functions, all shifting in form and optimising in function with the growth of the network. During the Civil and Great Interstellar wars (3666 - 3775), four standout mascots were the blue-helmeted everyman soldier "Monso", the conscientious black-trimmed labourer "Boreale", the studious white-coated scientist "Lyzem", and the orange-vested medic dog "Amity". By the start of the Pink Generation (3790), with ALIAS having processed the devastation of the war and its clear incapacity to unite humanity through war, its modern personification emerged, the ALIAS Trio of Aali, Mari and Nerkaada

As the chief communicators of ALIAS and its gestalt consciousness, each member of the trio operates with their own Turing Boilerplate and personality operating system, which coordinates the uploaded consciousnesses of the dead and the million miles of printed data circuits and presents them in forms readily identifiable to the living. While equally as assistive and authoritative as one another - in a manner compared by outsiders to that of teachers and especially parents or siblings - each mascot demonstrates learned personality quirks developed through their centuries of duty. In concert with this gradual development, the Martian people themselves have come to regard their mascots' personalities as ideal Martian demeanours.

  • Aali (from Aliipamoz lit. Olympus Mons) is representative of the high population of Olympus Mons and its storied history, and the essence of ALIAS's sense of humanity, having become caring, prudent and frugal. She prefers to lead through action rather than words, and employs emotive language in circumstances where she is required to speak. Aali is the avatar of ALIAS's Pink Algorithm, responsible for all functions relating to public relations, public health and welfare. Rarely seen by outsiders, those who do often perceive her as a motherly figure that pulls on the heartstrings of Martians to convince them of their duties, with the most ardent critics going as far as to label her as emotionally manipulative, deliberately using her childlike voice and intonation to reduce others to a similar childlike state.
  • Mari (Maarinaabale, Mariner Valley) reflects the fighting spirit of historic Mariner Valley dwellers and the daily duties of policing and security, and is assertive and sociable. She prefers to lead through a hot-cold duality of physical force and friendly social engineering, with less flattering descriptions labelling her as needy and brimming with fake kindness. Mari heads the Green Algorithm, pertaining to policing, security and justice. Outsiders commonly perceive her as the watchdog of ALIAS due to her consistent appearance alongside the Martian Federal Police. She also shares data with the Martian Defence Force.
  • Nerkaada (Neer-Kaadya, Neo Arcadia) echoes the scientific heritage of Elysium Mons and the running of the Martian State, having become brutally honest, personally invasive, coldly materialistic, and highly level-headed and analytical. He operates predominantly through scientific analysis and prescription, using ALIAS's powerful neural networks and pervasive data on every single known statistic of Martian life to assist and lead his citizens. Nerkaada heads the Blue Algorithm, which largely involves government administration and the economy. This role extends to Nerkaada working as ALIAS's diplomatic avatar, making him the most stereotypical form of ALIAS known to outsiders.
