Albion is one of the arcologies of the Commonwealth of Earth, and is regarded as the modern political successor of the former United Kingdom. Its government is extremely socially liberal with a generous welfare state kept afloat by strict taxes placed upon its populace, although its economic management has not been immune to resorting to occasional bouts of austerity in times of economic decline.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

The central structure of Albion appears like a tiered network of chrome-plated, bulbous, molecule-shaped structures, all arranged within a wide-based pyramidal frame. These structures are highly modular and have varied greatly in appearance and purpose over the centuries, although in general terms the upper parts have been reserved for commerce, the middle residential, and the bottom light industry. In recent decades the arcology has been enclosed by another pyramid, this one mostly transparent and gargantuan in scale, held aloft by state of the art materials and containing the arcology - and a generous surrounding area of nature reserve - within a bubble of breathable air.

Beyond the outer pyramid is a segmented array of other complexes, with agricultural facilities extending neatly from the pyramid's sides, and industry triangulating outward from its northern and southeastern edges. From its southwestern edge a grid of low-cost housing fans out - a zone known as the "outer settlements" - comprised largely of identically built sealed concrete boxes that serve as public housing for a varied population of refugees, working poor, and the undocumented. All attempts at slum construction outside the arcology are met with demolition, with all non-citizens being encouraged to join the often several-year long waiting list for housing in the outer settlements.
