He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.

–Cormac McCarthy

Dukkha Yuga is a syncretic doomsday cult that blends the apocalyptic beliefs of Christianity and Hinduism into a religion that says humanity is currently living in the end of days, also known as the Dukkha Yuga. The religion has a wide range of other beliefs including a continued belief in dharma and a coming messiah as well as influences from many other New Age Movements. Dukkha Yuga is infamous for its isolationist tendencies and violent reaction to outside interference with its affairs.

History[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

The origins of Dukkha Yuga are shrouded in mystery, perhaps intentionally. There is dispute even among the various Dukkha Yuga communities about the origins of the cult. Most of them do however relate the cult's origins back to the Climate Crisis. These origins are usually mixed in with mystical elements, but the general theme is one of impending doom on Earth with seemingly random features of older traditions and religions thrown together.

Dukkha Yuga slowly spread over the next two thousand years, though it would often meet resistance for its cultish behavior. For this reason and the cult’s ideals, many adherents of Dukkha Yuga have left Earth for more isolated areas, sometime even beyond the bounds of governed space. In particular, followers of the Yogi Marcus Loki were among the first civilians to settle within the Cervantes System, leading to a protracted conflict with local personnel from the Commonwealth of Earth. Other Dukkha Yuga would the first humans to arrive in several other exosolar systems far beyond the borders of governed space.

Current Era[edit | edit source]

In current times, Dukkha Yuga still believe they are living in the End Times. This and other cultish behavior means that most of known space has a negative opinion of them with various sects being occasionally raided or even outlawed by authorities. Nevertheless, Dukkha Yuga survives.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Dukkha Yuga has been fairly decentralized ever since its initial founding in 24th century. Although most adherents agree on the same foundational texts, there are many different individual sects Dukkha Yuga often led by a guru or minister of some standing. The organization of Dukkha Yuga rarely has gotten beyond this size, but faith leaders usually organize very well on a small scale, wielding complete unchallenged power over their sect.

Membership[edit | edit source]

The focus of Dukkha Yuga is isolation from the corrupt outer “world”, whether it be physical separation or spiritual separation. For this reason, Dukkha Yuga’s membership is divided between two major groups: those living among civilization in governed space and those living in isolation, sometimes in ungoverned space.

In known space, small populations of Dukkha Yuga live alongside larger society, though separated by their own rules and guidelines. Dukkha Yuga adherents are found in the Solar System on Earth and Jupiter and in the Gliese 832 System on Tranquility living among the larger populace. Meanwhile, Dukkha Yuga is disallowed on other planets such as Cariocecus and Zhu Que due to suspicions of the group planning violence against the authorities, supporting by their occasional clashes with law enforcement.

Meanwhile, there are many Dukkha Yuga communities who live apart from larger society in known space, sometimes even in ungoverned zones. The most well-known of these communities are in the Barnard's Star System, the Upsilon Andromedae System, and the Cervantes System while there are several more with the furthest being almost two hundred light years away from Earth.
