Edenite an official language of the Godly Republic of Eden and the now favored language of the state over Teegarden English. The language is the commonly used vernacular versus the more formal Teegarden English but is favored now because it seen as more “of Eden”.

Example[edit | edit source]

A very important part of life on Eden is religion, and the Lord's Prayer is a common refrain for many on Eden. In formal Edenite, it is:

  • Ur josang, ich art in haneul, Ee rum ul kuh ruk ha geh ha op see myu, Nah rah ee im Kwahng myu, Ty will ee done in earth, as is in haneul. Oh neul nahl ur daily bread. Ayn' Yuh joon gut gah chee oo ree eh chway rul, yuh joon trespass again us. Ayn' ead us no in temptry, Dah mahn ark us ee evil. Nah thine ich tha Kwahng ayn tha power ayn tha gloria forever. Amen.

Background[edit | edit source]

Realistically speaking, the languages of the year 4005 would be completely different to the ones spoken today. For comparison (although it is known that languages do not change at a fixed rate), two thousand years in the past English was a western descendent of the Germanic language family, and was mutually intelligible with dialects that'd in the next centuries become German, Dutch, Swedish, Friesian and etc. Obviously, we can't have our characters speaking a future English. But we can at least simulate the effects of varying degrees of mutual intelligibility between the dialects of English that are likely to emerge, particularly between the inhabited planets.

Edenite mostly developed as its own language in isolation from the rest of humanity and off-world English speakers. The Edenite language is a West Germanic language with significant influences from Korean, and it is the dialect of the rural and lower classes while the upper classes clung to English, at least until the Commonwealth occupation. Some have assessed Edenite to be a creole language of English and Korean, though the English influences are evidently stronger. Currently, the majority of Eden speaks Edenite, and it is favored by the government. It has less of a significant presence in Eden’s cities and the Godly Republic’s other possessions.
