Kokonotsu Reyer (born ?? 3958 CE, aged Saturnian years: 1.59; Earth equivalent: 47) is a Kimber-Sonoshee Racing League champion hailing from Dione.

History[edit | edit source]

Kokonotsu Reyer is the 9th of a series of clones of the superstar racer Kaede Reyer. The original Reyer’s skill with handling both VASIMR and Kimber ships led to her rising to the shining star of the Kimber-Sonoshee Racing League. Winning the Centauri Circuit twice and the Sirius Circuit even three times. The prize for her latest win in 3044 included her own clone lineage provided by Argonaut Inc.

Part of the contract included her clones to be used in test flights funded by several astronautic companies like Rhinestar Astronautics or Toha Heavy Industries, to hone their most recent lines of starships, whether for commercial or military use.

The clones used for these presentations or test drives are kept in a dormant state, their subconscious fed with the remote memories of their progenitor and artificial training routines to program a faux set of muscle memory. This means that when they are retrieved from their incubation tanks as infants, they already possess innate, if latent, subconscious reflexes and knowledge.

Childhood[edit | edit source]

In 3958, Kokonotsu was ‘born’ following the disappearance of her predecessor Yattsu in her 16th year of the Sirius Circuit. Observers had presumed a critical engine failure after the transponder of her ship, the latest in Kimber Drive technology provided by Rhinestar, had disappeared from the grid for more than four weeks.

As the protocol demanded, Kokonotsu was the next clone to be woken up. Implanted with a baseline of memories derived from the early life of the original Reyer, along with some modifications, Kokonotsu spend only 6 years with foster parents, both racers, before being admitted to the Youth Racing program of the Kimber-Sonoshee League.

Youth[edit | edit source]

The buried memories, data and bred reflexes gave her a natural cutting edge in the program, allowing her to rise through the league more or less unchallenged. This changed when she applied for the official Kimber League. With 18, she managed to pass the mandated entry time more on luck and guts than on experience. Nevertheless, Kokonotsu’s performance earned her a sponsorship from Giggles, a prominent snack producer. So far only a minor player in the league, they invested in the up and coming pilot expecting good promotion.

Early Career[edit | edit source]

During her early years in professional racing, competing in solar VASIMR races while simultaneously training with the much more demanding Kimber. After four years of steadily rising success, mainly winning speed contests against other junior pilots, Kokonotsu’s PR team announced a sudden break in her career. Together with another pilot, Lucian Romijnsen, she gave birth to a boy, Noah in 3980.

During her 2 year break from active racing, for the pregnancy and the following year, most of her work included promotional events for her sponsor or the league, encouraging young racers not to forget the importance of a legacy during their training.

In 3982, she made her comeback in the Kimber-Sonoshee Solar Circuit, the most prestigious and widely received VASIMR league. Though failing to land a winning position, her return to the scene was successful in a business were stars rise and fall from one race to another. While leaving child care mostly to a surrogate mother, Kokonotsu gradually transitioned from VASIMR racing to the Kimber league, showing more than promising results in trial races and stress tests.

The Sirius Circuit[edit | edit source]

Finally, in 3987, she passed the qualifying for the Kimber-Sonoshee Sirius Circuit, a race of no less than 17 years. Backed by two more sponsors, Flanc and Ibco Solutions, Kokonotsu would start in 3988, leaving behind her child, friends and everyone else she knew.

In 4005, Kokonotsu did not only return victorious, but she had set a new record with the 99.9% Kimber Drive in her ship. Winning not only an immense amount of credits but also ownership of her racer, the Stiletto, there was only one blemish on her victory. During the last year of the race, her ship’s sensors had picked up a distress call that was in fact the very same as her own ship.

Dismissing it at the time as a mere technical glitch, she found her team’s technicians oddly defensive about it when questioned, telling her to simply ignore it. They achieved the exact opposite of what they intended, prompting Kokonotsu to trace the signal back to the Leonis system. Barely 2 weeks after her victory, she packed the Stiletto and once more left her life behind to find the truth for herself.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Kokonotsu has green eyes and dark brown hair, which she typically has bleached and dyed various colours (most famously, yellow). Like most modern inhabitants of the moons of the Solar gas giants, she has a standard human build due to living most of her (relative) life in artificial 1g environments, either in rotating domes, or aboard ships or spin stations.
