The Main Belt is a ring-shaped region in the Solar System, located roughly between the orbits of the planets Jupiter and Mars. The primary planetoid within the Main Belt is the dwarf planet Ceres, which is a center for ice mining within the many asteroids. Smaller objects such as Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea are also inhabited, but Ceres is the only object that is politically salient enough to be disputed by any of the main powers. The rest of the Main Belt is understood to be an Interstellar Zone, exploited for its resources by a hundredfold corporations and small-time rockhoppers. Individual Belter communities live on hundreds of different asteroids and space stations, and they have a culture of rugged individualism in the face of Earth and Mars. Their immense dislike of corporations is perhaps only rivaled by their counterparts in the Kuiper Belt.
