Uranus is an ice giant located within the Solar System that is classified as an interstellar zone. Previously held by the Commonwealth of Earth as a department, Uranus was released alongside Ceres but has remained disputed ever since. It is perhaps the most volatile area remaining within the Solar System.

Ethnicity[edit | edit source]

The “Uranian” ethnicity is fairly nebulous, being something of a bastard child of Belters and Earther colonists during the Commonwealth Wars era. Uranus was once overwhelmingly Belter similarly to early Neptune, but after the Luna Raids, the Commonwealth worked tirelessly to stamp out any trace of separatism and to integrate the Belters with newer Earther colonists. This resulted in an awkward mixed Uranian populace currently who have complicated feelings about the past of Uranus. This mixed Uranian population is the overwhelming majority of Uranus while a large minority are Earther colonists. The historic Uranian Belter population does not exist anymore, but their presence is felt in the planet’s culture and cityscape. The historic Uranian Martian population also does not exist in the current day, as they largely left following intense riots coinciding with the Martian Genocide.

Resentment between Uranians and Earther colonists remained under control for centuries under Commonwealth rule, even as Neptune burned multiple times due to strife between Tritonians and Belters. That bottled-up resentment boiled into open warfare however after the Commonwealth withdrawal, with neighbor invading one another’s property and lines being drawn as chaos became widespread communal violence.

Language[edit | edit source]

At one time, Uranian existed as a unique Belter creole language that developed on Uranus over a millennium. However, the Commonwealth worked hard to stamp the language out during the Commonwealth Wars, and it was largely successful with few remnants of the Uranian language left. Solar English is the standard language on Uranus, as it was enforced by the Commonwealth government. After the hasty Commonwealth withdrawal, some Uranian nationalists have attempted to reassert the Uranian language, but efforts have remained minimal as Uranus remains divided and chaotic.

Philosophy[edit | edit source]

On Uranus, there are surprisingly several competing ideologies due to the planet's turbulent history and the recent withdrawal of the Commonwealth. This has resulted in multiple factions adopting these ideologies and duking it for control of Uranus. The rest of the system, aside from the IGSA, has largely sat out the civil war though some states do back certain factions.

The most reactionary faction are the Earther loyalists, who wish Uranus to return to its status as a department of Earth. They believe the release of Uranus by Earth and the following coup to have been mistakes that they believe can still be rectified if they fight hard enough. Represented mainly by the Commonwealth Defense Association, Earther loyalists are relatively small in number and lack any sort of external support, even from the Commonwealth itself. However, they are well-armed, have high support among remaining Earther colonists, and have an uneasy truce with IGSA peacekeepers.

The largest ideological group on Uranus are Uranian nationalists, who want an independent Uranus with Uranians in charge. They are also the most divided, with many different currents of the thoughts between Uranian nationalists. These nationalists agree on little besides the independence of Uranus and are perfectly willing to war upon on another to fulfill their vision of the future.

This includes the Uranian Freehold Army, popular sovereign nationalists who seek to establish an independent Uranian state along Neptunian lines. They also have also made promises to not expropriate property from Earther colonists after the war if they are victorious. The so-called Freeholders have wide popular support, but they are hobbled by various factors, the most prominent being the well-known criminal past of their leadership and their controversial stance against expropriation of property, alienating many other nationalists. Neptune has so far only offered scant support to the Freeholders, but many Neptunians are supportive of them, wanting their government to do more to support the Freeholders. Meanwhile, the group's criminal contacts also go a long way to assisting the Freeholders.

The Uranian Army for National Integrity (UANI), headed by the charismatic General Lock, are national capitalists who look to Saturn for inspiration. Truthfully, UANI is more of a vehicle for Lock as a Saturnian-backed warlord backed by opportunists and mercenaries. The group is vague on its attitudes towards Earther colonists, with Lock not yet sure on what he wants to do to them.

The Outer Order is a ultranationalist fascist army that seeks to free Uranus from all outside influence, foreign and domestic. Calling for a strong one-party state, the Outer Order seeks to completely expulse all remaining Earther elements on Uranus and embrace the planet's belter past, as well as some inspiration from regimes such as Cariocecus. The Outer Order's Field Marshal Xerxes Hyde is an enigmatic and cunning leader who always seems to keep both his friends and enemies guessing. However, his personal friendship with General Lock and acceptance of Saturnian support has led to cooperate with UANI frequently in the past.

Left-wing ideology also exists on Uranus, though it has a much smaller influence than nationalism. It exists largely in the form of the United Front of Uranus, an alliance of groups determined to overthrow the oppressive systems that once ruled the planet. They wish to collectivize all property, not just that of the Earther colonists, and see nationalism as a stumbling block to a freer society. The alliance is unofficially headed largely by the local cell of Hatchet, supported by volunteers from across the system. Other smaller groups include the frontier anarchist Rock Brotherhood, the libertarian socialist Uranian Soviet, and the orthodox Marxist Uranian People's Liberation Front (UPLF) along with other smaller groups. All these fractious left-wing groups have been held together (so far) by the tireless leadership of Secretary General Arthur Price, a Cruzist member of Hatchet originally of Saturnian nationality. The United Front has no outside support though are generally assumed to be pawns of Mars (and ALIAS by extension).

The general population of Uranus favor nationalism with expropriation of the Earther colonist property being a touchy issue. Due to much of the Uranian remaining extremely poor, the promise of "free stuff" is incredibly tempting for many, and the Earther colonists have understandably become very defensive on the issue. The position of the various groups fighting for control of Uranus ebb and flow by the year, so it is really anyone's guess at the moment who will emerge on top.

Religion[edit | edit source]

Stereotypes[edit | edit source]

Uranians are stereotyped usually as either self-hating Belters, Belter criminals, or ultra-nationalist Earther colonists with some overlap. This differs greatly from the pre-Commonwealth Wars view of Uranus as simply a nest of Belter smugglers, pirates, and criminals with a thin veneer of respectability. The former Commonwealth military presence is also well known, with many Uranians being ex-military themselves.
