Adrian Gerad Lakett (born 22nd March 3959) is a high-profile Columbian who currently serves as a navigator within the Axil Merchant Marine.
History[edit | edit source]
Adrian grew up during the Collie Civil Rights Movement of the late 60’s to mid 70’s, which saw the landslide election of Reformers leader Prelli Yacob to office in ‘75, discrediting the multi-century old status quo established by the conservative Patriots Party, and seeing a sweep of progressive reforms enter the arcology’s legislature. Positive reforms included the institution of a welfare state, including a small universal basic income, free primary, secondary and regulated tertiary education, and public healthcare, with a retaliating police strike of ‘76 putting a stop to further ambitions. The Reformers, not bucking to police pressure nor wishing to appear weak in the face of terrorism - which was a protested but still popularly held fear - soon decided to withdraw from planned police reform that would have seen a cutting down of surveillance powers and security funding.
The middle child of Gerad Lakett and Michel Lakett, pioneering figures during the Reformer movement, Adrian grew up with the pressure of meeting the expectations of the Lakett name, particularly after the scandal his elder brother's opiate addiction brought upon the family. With his brother lacking any aspirations beyond menial, even more pressure was put on Adrian to climb the corporate ladder. Adrian's willingness to acquiesce to his parents' expectations at least allowed his younger brother, Lee, to pursue his passion for medicine upon a career as a nurse at the Whitewater Public Hospital in Arcology West.
Working as an AI container after graduating high school in 3977, Adrian initially earned himself a reputation of a diligent worker with a keen eye for spotting behavioral anomalies. The expansion of Axil industries in '81 saw Adrian promoted to a junior management position, with him acquiring Axil shares for his stock portfolio. In '84 Adrian earned acclaim from the company's higher ranks after spotting a highly exploitable segment of junk code within the competing Argonaut Inc.'s AI systems, seeing him rise to manager of his section by '85.
Expecting to keep a comfortable desk job for the rest of his life while he steadily rose through the ranks of the company, the Xin Xiwang coup of 3989 threw a spanner in the works, with the political and economic chaos of the Five Hour War seeing Argonaut Inc. replace Axil Industries as the primary contractor of various key Commonwealth industrial sectors. The ensuing purges forced Adrian to leave Earth for the sake of his own safety and abandon his family. With the company gutted, Adrian's section was dissolved, and he was offered a position within the Axil Merchant Marine as a navigator aboard the Whale Shark Class CES Ossington, set to undertake a 16 year round trip to the CN Leonis. Without any other options, Adrian accepted the position, which he quickly adapted to as it required much of the same skills required from him during his days as an AI container.
In 3997, during his time within CN Leonis, Adrian became embroiled in a legal dispute with Proxian Credit over mining rights within the system. Having studied law during his time as a manager, he was able to determine that under the IGSA charter for ungoverned space, both parties had to share the mineral wealth of the system. Resolving the issue without the use of force earned him a promotion to Senior Crewman and a permanent position upon the bridge.
By 4005, Adrian returned to the Solar System, with the time dilation experienced during interstellar travel pushing him - from his reference point - 16 years into the future. Upon his return, Adrian learned of his family's relocation to Titan, who sought to continue their careers with Axil Industries away from the influence of Xin Xiwang. Gerad's career had pivoted away from recycling and deep-earth antarctic endeavours towards mining the resources of Saturn itself, while Conor and Lee had re-appropriated their previous roles for new settings, albeit with a much more capitalistic backdrop. Conor found a new life exploiting the free Saturnian market, mining cryptocurrency and dealing in fetishistic commodities, while Lee found his pleasant nursing prospects fall to the wayside amidst the grim realities of the profit-focused Saturnian medical industry.

Personality[edit | edit source]
Adrian is an ambitious, emotionally restrained, clever individual with a generous capacity for humour and kind-heartedness. His upbringing, life experience and time working with Axil has sculpted him into a rather stoic and outwardly optimistic person who prefers to bend the truth to benefit a situation, and to keep his personal opinions to himself, passing off hostility or difficult opinions with a measured - often jovial - remark and a smile. Despite presenting himself as far more level-headed than his siblings, the elder having fully embraced the decadent and entrepreneurial culture of Saturn and the younger falling victim to the crushing life of nursing on the capitalistic planet, in his heart Adrian knows that he is equally a slave to his nature: craving the success and adventure befitting a Lakett, and escaping the troubles of the present through time dilation. Ultimately, Adrian is lonely, his only true friend being himself, with his desires pushing him into multi decade-long contracts in interstellar space with little to no contact with friends and family back home.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Adrian has a medium build, tanned skin and shaggy blonde hair. He often skips shaving, resulting in a near-permanent stubble. He wears a practical multi-segmented interface suit beneath his standard Axil Industries-provided work clothes.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Parents[edit | edit source]
As Adrian's parents were activists during the Civil Rights Movement, their experiences taught them the virtue of solidarity, the reality of Columbia's brutal regime, and the hidden intelligence and goodwill of the masses. They passed these stories down to their children, which instilled within Adrian a faith in the possibility - despite the rising dominance of the autocratic Xin Xiwang and the soaring threat of terrorism - for the entire Commonwealth to reform for the better. However, even though they had played a significant role during the Civil Rights Movement, Adrian’s parents developed more nationalistic and contradictory ideas about the nature of the system, with them putting a cargo cult-like stock into the value of braving the storm while keeping high morale that came to clash with Adrian's own ideals.
