The Republic of Nova (Novian English: Erpublik Nova; Novian: Walfbawuottsajabotsei; Martian English: Ribeliknova) is an interstellar state based on the moon of Nova that governs the Wolf 1061 System.

History[edit | edit source]

Wolf 1061 was selected to be the second system to be colonised by humankind (after Proxima Centauri b), and the first ever for permanent habitation. As part of a joint Earth-Mars effort - combining Earth's industrial strength with Mars's experience with terraforming - the Nova Generation Ship was constructed on Luna, and Nova itself pre-seeded by terraforming drones, with the colony ship eventually setting sail in 3083. Hopes, however, changed in the centuries after launch, with continual technological innovation seeing the prowess of this first fleet overtaken by superior Kimber Drives. Nova was thus beaten to the title of first by the Tranquility Launch Arco entering the orbit of Gliese 832 c in 3222, and the once-aligned hopes for Nova by Earth and Mars began to diverge.

When the Nova Generation Ship finally landed upon the soil of Nova in 3307, its passengers had developed a bizarre, near-alien culture throughout their centuries of isolation, with successive generations losing a cognizant understanding of ship doctrine as it evolved into a cargo-cult like process of copying the work of their forebears. In the following years, a second wave of settlers with a much more Solar-like culture arrived on the planet, and immediately found themselves at odds with the first settlers.

Since the 3670's, following the rise of the ALIAS regime, Nova has attracted special favour from the Martian Federation, who seek to turn the world into Martian asset. In a long-term agreement with the Novian government, Mars has agreed to maximize oxygen farming and optimize Nova's late-stage terraforming requirements in exchange for colony deeds and lucrative mining contracts.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Habitability[edit | edit source]

Formerly bearing a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen, the ongoing terraforming initiative - starting in the centuries prior to colonisation - has seen Nova's atmosphere converted into a moderate layer of breathable oxygen-nitrogen rich air, with a density comparable to the higher altitudes of Earth or Mars. Black leaved plants thrive on Nova and terrestrial farming methods are able to be recreated on the moon.

Nova, like most planets orbiting red dwarfs, is tidally locked, with only its terminator line bearing acceptably pleasant temperatures between its scorched western and frozen eastern hemispheres. Several research and mining outposts exist on the eastern hemisphere, the resources exploited for the good of Nova.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Novian society has seen the development of three differently-aligned culture groups: the First Settlers, the Late Settlers, and the Extrasolar Martians.

The First Settlers, who call themselves simply the "Novians" (Novian: Walfbashe), are the descendants of the initial colonization effort who maintain a firm belief in the Novian Temple, a melting pot, cargo-cult religion born during the centuries of isolation in space. The First Settlers pride themselves on being able to trace their lineage back through the centuries to the pioneers who settled the planet and retaining the traditions of their faith. Within the First Settlers there exists religious diversity, from the different interpretations of the Novian Temple. Moderate believers embrace the need for progress and change, in keeping with the flexibility of the Great Manifest, while hardliners strictly abide by the Original Protocols, refusing technology brought by later colonists.

The Late Settlers are the largest demographic, the most diverse, and the most accepting of Solar influence. Their culture is a blend of all the groups that have come to settle since the first wave although they have adopted some of the cultural quirks from the First Settlers. The descendants of immigrants from Earth, the Jovian Interstellar Republic and a large number of pre-ALIAS Martians, who brought with them terraforming expertise, maintaining their old ways in opposition to the modern regime.

The Extrasolar Martians are the smallest demographic, comprised of post-ALIAS settlers that live in 0.376 g orbital stations and work in specially zoned Federal territories on Nova, focusing primarily on mining and oxygen farming. Martian settlers are prohibited from leaving these designated areas and only vetted members of the Novian government are permitted entry to inspect the sites. With the opportunity to mingle with the other groups limited, the Martians retain their xenophobic ideas of their homeworld, content in their own isolated bubbles. Similar to the Ceres colony, the Martian territories are governed by a simpler capsule-form of ALIAS known as MaND (Mazfredasan Nova Daarektiv), lit. Mind, Commonwealth English: Martian Federation Nova Directive), personified by "Noov", a white-orange mascot similar in design and function to her three siblings back on Mars.
