Io is a moon of Jupiter and department of the Jovian Interstellar Republic. The moon's closeness to Jupiter and its orbital resonance with Europa and Ganymede subject it to intense tidal pressure - far greater than the tidal effects of Luna on Earth - resulting in extreme geologic activity such as volcanoes and earthquakes. Due to these factors, the only inhabitants of Io are a few well-kitted researchers and mining robots involved in helium, iron and sulfur mining operations.
In the early days of the Jovian Interstellar Republic, a motion was proposed to convert disused mining facilities left abandoned on Io into maximum security detainment centers, but it was not passed citing the logistical difficulties in maintaining a permanent human presence on the volcanic moon. Popular conspiracy theories maintain that the plan went ahead regardless, at the behest of the Jovian armed forces and security services. The Jovian government has admitted to the existence of a military presence on Io, as part of their commitment to maintain a presence on every Galilean moon, but the nature of the presence has not been disclosed.
