Mujaddid Islam is a branch of the Islamic faith that holds the Mujaddid Caliphate, founded by Mujahid Chaudhari during the War of the Caliphate, to be the true successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad and a leader of the entire ummah (Muslim community). The religion is mostly confined to Qaf and clashes frequently with hostile Salafists who live nearby.
History[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
The origins of the Mujaddid sect begin with the destruction of the Ottoman Caliphate as part of the reforms of Turkey's first president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The Sunni caliphate was an institution that had existed in some form for more than a thousand years, but this end was more permanent. The global landscape of the 20th century led the ascendancy of Arab nationalism at the cost of religious power, but the issue of the caliphate would become an issue again with a surge of Islamism. The Islamic State or Daesh, a Salafist jihadist group, attempted to reform the Sunni caliphate by force of arms in Iraq and Syria, only to be brought down by a coalition horrified by the alleged caliphate's brutality. After the destruction of ISIS, pro-caliphate sentiment did not however die out with various political parties carrying the banner through the next few centuries.
The Christianislam Crisis and the following flight to Qaf led to further distress to the Ummah with calls for a new caliphate to steer Islam in a better direction. This movement seemingly attained its goal with the establishment of the Qafi Caliphate by General Mujahid Chaudhari. Chaudhari overtook much of Qaf and secured Akash, but his success was thwarted by both local enemies and Commonwealth invaders. Mujahid Chaudhari and his followers, called the Mujaddids, were driven into the remote regions of Qaf, and the Caliphate continued as an insurgency against the central government of Qaf for more than a century before the Mujaddids aided fellows Qafis in driving out Martian invaders, leading to a reconciliation of sorts.
However, the conflict between Mujaddids and the rest of Qaf would not stop simply with the cessation of violence. Religious and political distinctions remained between the Mujaddid minority and the Salafist majority with occasional communal violence in mixed areas such as the Valley of the Prophet. Nevertheless, the Mujaddid insurgency against has mostly ebbed since the Martian invasion but has not completely disappeared with extremists groups still vying to give the current Mujaddid Caliph political power, despite his own personal objections.
Current Era[edit | edit source]
Most Mujaddids currently reject the path of violence and seek solutions through democracy and discourse with the government of Qaf. They still lack a single state to call their homeland, but the caliphate, along with their persecution, gives them a sort of unity the Salafi majority on Qaf lacks. They are hopeful for the future, for a Qaf finally free of strife and discord.
Structure[edit | edit source]
Mujaddid Islam is a branch of Islam descended from Salafi Islam and by extension, Sunni Islam. Mujaddids are almost identical to Salafists except for their recognition of their caliphate, formed by Mujahid Chaudhari. The Mujaddid Caliph is still an existing institution with Moksud Das being the current caliph. The caliph mediates decisions affecting the entire Mujaddid community and internal disputes, but it has no state power. Meanwhile, imams and other religious institutions within Mujaddid Islam are similar in makeup to Salafi Islam.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Founded on Qaf, Mujaddid Islam remains largely confined there as a minority religion with limited representation within the celestial federation. There are Mujaddids in other parts of the Trappist System due to immigration, especially Akash, but the religion has not really spread from there.
