Pure fusion weapon
This is about pure fusion weapons as they appear in the 4005 setting. For general information about the subject, see Wikipedia's article of the same name
Pure fusion weapons, also known as fourth-generation nuclear weapons, is the term applied to thermonuclear weapons that use a non-fission trigger to ignite the fusion of deuterium and tritium, producing a tactically useful nuclear explosion without the radioactive byproducts produced in the process of fission.
Though first theorised in the 1950's, the first viable pure fusion weapons saw development in the mid 2100's following significant advancements in laser technology, which also allowed for the first viable fusion reactors in the form of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) reactors. Though pure fusion bombs were successfully constructed, these laser emitters proved impossible to feasibly miniaturise for use in Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's).
In later centuries with advancements in antimatter production, the laser triggers were replaced with antimatter-based triggers, which although far more expensive, were far lighter (with only a few micrograms being required), thus paving the way for pure fusion ICBM's.
