Fate of Europe[edit | edit source]
- Expansion on Pillar of Hope and New Europe
Ideological resentment and denial towards nuclear energy had formed an impasse for some of the states of the European Community in the mid-21st century. At the same time rose the sea level, amount of greenhouse gasses and the prices of gasoline, each of them creating great concern and stress on ordinary citizens of the European Community. Rises in gasoline prices had invoked major riots within the central-Europe in the early-21st century and they showed no halting as the years passed. Rises in gasoline prices led to resentment towards government and especially towards the Bureau of the European Community. Almost every European state failed to meet their ends of the Paris Agreement because of the state-level refusal to implement the needed changes on their economy.
As the peak oil was reached around 2040, prices of the fossil fuels jumped into levels not seen before. Trade wars and blockades created between the western and eastern countries had left some states with significant oil reserves that now propelled their economies into levels that had been impossible to attain without the peak oil. However, western states did not hesitate to secure some of these valued resources by force, as it had been their custom in the past.
Treaty of Bern was an answer what many green activists had sought out for years and decades. In the late-21st century, it was signed by the major actors within the European Community and it established the United European Commons. Regime of the United European Commons (UEC) enforced its states to comply into the updated goals of the Paris Agreement. Birth of the UEC was a devastating blow for the liberal, free market economy and shook its very core within the UEC. Many areas within the central- and western-Europe were already turning in the change of 21st and 22nd millennium into uninhabitable wastelands of uncontrollable floods and wetlands. Migrations from the Africa and Middle East during the mid-21st century had created vastly segregated societies within the European states and the growing differences in income had divided nationalities from each others. Treaty of Bern was not something that was widely endorsed on state level, but the alienated Bureau of the European Community drove it through. UEC managed to create a European Constitution, which granted the Bureau with large abilities to overrule the state level decisions within the UEC. This saw the rise of UEC-wide social- and healthcare reformations and the new beginning of a morally competent Europe.
As suspected by the sceptics of those times, UEC ultimately failed in their attempt to create a stable, prospering and fair western-Europe. Rise of the sea level in North Sea coastline caused large swathes of people to seek new homes in the central-Europe. The Danish straits suffered the same fate. Northern shores of the central-Europe too were evacuated in mid-22nd century which finally brought the overtly bureaucratic UEC and its poorly constructed healthcare system down. These events brought rise to all kinds of products that broke the hegemony to suppress the market society within UEC as agreed in the Treaty of Bern. One of the most noteworthy of these products is the domed city of Hunsrück, which invigorated the idea of constructing the scifi-ish dome cities for all Europeans.
New Manhattan Army[edit | edit source]
New Manhattan Army, officially the New Manhattanite section of the Commonwealth Defence Forces, is one of the land warfare military branches of the Commonwealth Defence Forces.
History[edit | edit source]
New Manhattan Army traces its origins to the Liberty Central arcology built on the eastern coast of the North America in 3189 before the unification of Earth. Liberty Central had a strong influence over the domed cities an underground facilities located on the eastern coast of the North America, where the former American people now lived. Liberty Central also held itself responsible of overseeing these people as the citizens of its own and so it maintained a strong military presence all over the eastern coast. Military District of New York was established by Liberty Central in 3199 as the first off-arcology district of Liberty Central. It was soon followed by the establishing of Georgia, Mississippi Basin and Kentucky Military Districts and re-establishing of Military District of Washington.
Even if the actual nation states had long since diminished the patriotic fundamentalism in North America ensured that the Liberty Central was willing to exert great amount of resources towards its military. Establishing of military districts not only marked its capabilities as the suppreme actor in the international politics - or what was left of it - they also formed their own local governments and essentially borders of their direct influence. At its largest the Liberty Central had direct influence over the domed cities, underground facilities, shelters and slums from Georgia Bay to Bay of Montreal.
Libery Central arcology had problems with ventilation and leakage of the contaminated air outside the arcology. After backing up the construction of Zion arcology in Sinai Peninsula the Centralians looked back on their own problems and began the work on a new American arcology. Military District of New York was by far largest and effectively cannibalised the resources assigned to its smaller neighbors. Even if the New York city area had been lost to sea around six hundred years before, its surrounding hills had been inhabited in the late 2200s by dome cities. These dome cities - even if they'd been repurposed countless times - were largely utilised by the military personnel of the New York Military District in 34th century. Large on-site population and vast amounts of scrapable materials from pre-Hypoxia constructions combined with the strong presence of the establishment saw the foundations of New Manhattan arcology laid down in the area.
Military District of New York had large amounts of resources transferred from other military districts in the late-34th century as the Liberty Central began its reorganisation into the new location. New Manhattan Army was established in 3409 as the construction of the new arcology began and it recruited large amounts of people within the former military district as to ensure some form of patriotic and nationalistic tendencies. All who served were automatically granted a residence within the new arcology when it was finished and people were ready to kill for a post within the army. Especially the Grim Breeze of 3415 in Liberty Central, where 15 thousand people died as overpressured ventilation on levels 3 to 8 (levels -10 to 2 had already been flooded some years before with minimal publicity) broke down and the hydrogen sulfide flooded them. New Manhattan Army took over the riot control within the Liberty Central in 3415 and effectively massacred at least three thousand rioters on different levels of the degrading arcology. Officials of the Liberty Central abandoned the arcology by 3422 and relocated themselves in the New Manhattan Army run Sterling Dome.
Internal instability - caused by mass migration from Liberty Central into the domes in early 35th century, followed by riots, protests and violent clashes between military and civilians - allowed Shengli the European arcos to form joint operations to center the power on Earth outside of the North American soil. Large military districts of Liberty Central were also largely abandoned or went rogue after the news of the arco's demolition were announced in 3438. Nuclear arsenal assigned to Military District of Mississippi Basin disappeared, their final destination never quite uncovered.
New Manhattan Army took over the control of the finished arcology in 3440 and the government of Liberty Central was exiled in the northern wastes. Former presidential associates were mostly recruited as advisors to the new military government but some too fond of the old regime were cast into the prisons and, ironically, became the first citizens in the database of New Manhattan.
General of the Army Obadiah King also became to hold the title of the president of the New Manhattan arcology in 3442 after two years of harsh military regime. At first the New Manhattan imitated the Liberty Central's past government but as the state was, according to President King himself, "in a very precarious state", his reign lasted for fifteen years before he was overthrown in 3457 during the violent December Dethronement. President King was succeeded by President Harry Stimson who also was a general within the New Manhattan Army.
President Stimson however was a classic republican and had an uncallous attitude towards the civil society and the civilians in general. Radical changes were made within the arcology and as of 3459 mandatory conscription was replaced with a voluntarily one. Those who had served still enjoyed large amount of rights that were unavailable for those adults who had not served in the New Manhattan Army. These included, for example, free healthcare, freedom of assembly and right for personal weapons. First presidential elections were organised in 3464 which saw President Stimson a new term that was also now fixed for five years. Even if requested numerous times, law enforcement was not separated from the army by President Stimson, and it was carried out by specialised militia troops that had tendency to exploit their status especially on those adults who had not served themselves. Many within the New Manhattan Army saw it acceptable.
