The Leonis Free Navy is a rebel fleet in the AD Leonis System focused upon securing the system against outside influence. Formerly part of the Commonwealth Navy, the Leonis Free Navy now is loyal only to the people of AD Leonis or so its leader Mariana van Rossem claims. The group works to expunge all outside influence from the AD Leonis System, both from states and corporations.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of the Leonis Free Navy began with the arrival of news of a coup d’etat on Earth in the AD Leonis System. Reaching Commonwealth of Earth Navy forces stationed on Eropis, Admiral Mariana van Rossem readied the Commonwealth Navy AD Leonis Fleet for deployment in anticipation of a backlash from corporate forces within the system.

Axil Industries struck first against Argonaut Incorporated forces stationed in orbit around Shizi station. Commonwealth Navy forces arrived at Shizi too late to save the bulk of the Argonaut Merchant Fleet, and the Axil Merchant Marine had retreated before interception was possible. The Executive of Argonaut’s AD Leonis Branch, Talya Seong, claimed that the Commonwealth Navy had failed to perform its duty of protecting Commonwealth of Earth interests and demanded that Mariana van Rossem destroy the rogue Axil Merchant Marine in retribution. Matters were further complicated when news of a ceasefire between the two corporations arrived two days later, with an order being given to the Axil Merchant Marine to stand down by the Axil Industries CEO ratified by the Secretary General of Earth, Secretary General of the Interstellar Governed Space Authority and CEO of the Interstellar Police Force.

Mariana van Rossem decreed that she would enforce the ceasefire in accordance with this mandate and disarm both corporate forces. Bertrand Sutherland, Executive of Axil Industries AD Leonis Branch, and Tayla Seong both sent encrypted tight beams to Mariana van Rossem’s flagship, the Lion’s Glory, requesting she backed their claims on the system, with promises of financial rewards if she did so. The admiral tried to bring this attempted bribery to the attention of the IGSA Representative for AD Leonis, Fredrika Kaufer, and the Chief Superintendent of the AD Leonis INTPOL branch, Amanda Bonham, only to discover they had both been bought by Axil Industries and Argonaut Incorporated respectively. Determined to carry out her duty impartially, Mariana van Rossem split her fleet in order to formally disarm the two forces, only to be fired upon by both sides. Simultaneously, an attempt was made on the admiral’s life by a paid off subordinate, Rear Admiral Kamal Braun, who had been bribed by Axil Industries to mutiny. Faced with external attacks across the system and an internal crisis, Mariana ordered the Commonwealth Navy to open fire on all the corporate vessels. After a brief firefight in which the corporate forces were decimated, she ordered all surviving vessels to disable transponders and hard burn for Eriopis.

During the return journey to Eriopis the admiral broadcast a wide beam transmission instructing her subordinates to purge all corporatist elements within the fleet. Upon docking the heavily damaged Lion’s Glory at Eriopis, the fleet numbered less than a dozen interstellar capable vessels. INTPOL officers attempted to arrest the admiral when she boarded the station but were swiftly vanquished. Betrayed by the very institutions she had trusted her entire service, Mariana van Rossem opened a wide beam communication to the entire system and renounced the oaths she had sworn to the Commonwealth of Earth, declaring herself loyal only to the people of AD Leonis. Her crew appointed her Fleet Admiral of what she named the Leonis Free Navy. In turn, Mariana’s officers swore allegiance to her and her alone, recognising the need to secure a system free from outside influence. In the process Eriopis was purged of all corporate offices and its transponder disabled. Mariana focused her efforts on repairing her forces and preparing for all out war.

By the end of the year the system was consumed by the war, with trade ships targeted and attempts made to cripple the three stations. Under the orders of Mariana van Rossem, Eriopis was moved into the AD Leonis Hot Zone. Similarly, Argonaut withdrew the Shizi into the AD Leonis Oort Cloud. Construction of the Starfish class orbital city, Saja Byeol, was abandoned at the onset of the conflict. As it lies within proximity to Eriopis and represents the future of the system, it is claimed in its entirety by the Leonis Free Navy.

Ideology[edit | edit source]

The ideals of the Leonis Free Navy are rather vague, centering around an almost religious devotion to its leader Fleet Admiral Mariana van Rossem. The group is anti-corporation and populist, hoping to secure a better life for the people of the AD Leonis System. Beyond that, the Leonis Free Navy has little in way of real ideology. Enemies of the group have characterized them as little more than pirates with an especially authoritarian leader, but most members of the Leonis Free Navy would dispute this, saying they fight for the people, not just Admiral van Rossem.

Influence[edit | edit source]

As the Leonis Free Navy focuses its efforts on the AD Leonis System, most of its influence is confined to the system. The group has sympathizers among many within the AD Leonis System, particularly among the local Hatchet cell.
