The People's Republic of Cariocecus (Cariocecian: Dasterepublic Cariocecus) is the official name of the celestial state that governs the planet Cariocecus (also known as TRAPPIST 1d), formerly known as Bellona. A militaristic technocracy guided by the unyielding ARES, the People's Republic is the most direct opposition to Mars and ALIAS in governed space due its status as a former Martian colony still considered to be "in rebellion" by Mars.

History[edit | edit source]

Early Settlement[edit | edit source]

Discovered in 2016 by the Spitzer Space Telescope, TRAPPIST-1d was initially believed to fall within the habitable zone of the TRAPPIST-1 system. Similar to Mars' mass, radius, density, gravity, temperature, and stellar flux, TRAPPIST-1d was determined to be one of exoplanets most suitable for sustaining human life. At a distance of thirty-nine light years from Earth, exploration of the the TRAPPIST-1 System (also known as the Trappist System) plans for an interstellar probe to be sent to the system were met with logistical concerns regarding the viability and lifespan of the vessel. It was only after the success of the Alpha Centauri, Barnard's Star and Luyten's Star probes that a mission was green lit for the TRAPPIST-1 system by the Indian Space Agency in 2249, on the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the star's discovery. The journey took 340 years, with the probe arriving in 2589. The automated probe undertook a ten year mission, collecting data on the seven planets within the system and broadcasting them back to Earth. The first messages from the probe were received by the United Governed Space Authority in 2628, prompting the TRAPPIST-1 system to be placed high up the priority list on systems suited for colonization.

Following on from the success of the colonization of the Luyten System in the 2900s, interest in establishment of extrasolar colonies brought the Trappist System to the fore, with the seven worlds considered desirable for sustainable long term habitation due to the accommodating gravitational accelerations of the six habitable planets being suitable for both Earthers and Martians. In the early 3000's the TRAPPIST Friendship Initiative was undertaken jointly between Earth and Mars. The joint initiative was done to encourage further cooperation between Earth and Mars, to serve as a test bed for new Martian terraforming technology, and to resettle Martian citizens out of the overpopulated metropolitan cities. The planets TRAPPIST-1d and TRAPPIST-1e were selected as targets for colonization, accommodating to the needs of the Martians and the Earthers respectively. The colony ships left the system in 3017 on the one thousandth anniversary of the discovery of the two planets.

Arriving in 3057, the worlds were settled concurrently and in the early years of the TRAPPIST Friendship Initiative, the inhabitants of both planets moved freely between them, finding work where they were needed most. Motivated to build another Mars, the initial colonists excavated a vast tunnel network to house the populace. The planet was named Bellona, after the ancient Roman goddess of war and consort of Mars.

Bellona was administrated as a Celestial Colony by the Interstellar Governed Space Authority, with limited representation afforded to the colonists. The Bellonan Colonial Government obtained permission to utilize FRIEND for management of infrastructure projects and resource distribution. The automation of the early colonial period enabled the colony to rapidly expand to accommodate for the arrival of further immigrants from Mars.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Habitability[edit | edit source]

Cariocecus is a rocky planet with an atmosphere dominated by CO2 and water vapour with a gravity comparable to that of Mars. Approximately 5% of its mass is water, which covers a large majority of its surface, earning it the title of TRAPPIST-1's "ocean world". The low albedo of its surface water, which is kept in a liquid state due to tidal heating and geothermal activity, has encouraged the formation of a runaway greenhouse effect that, while not Venus-like in temperature (with a relatively pleasant average surface temperature of around 9°C), allows the trapping of enough ultraviolet radiation. The planet is tidally locked, with one hemisphere locked in eternal sunlight while the other is trapped in darkness. The planet's population live on both sides of the planet, but the population is mainly concentrated in the dark side similar to Qaf. Unlike Qaf however, there is little cultural variation between populations in different hemispheres.

Government[edit | edit source]

Politics[edit | edit source]

Ever since the fall of Valleyan Clique and the accompanying presidential system, Cariocecus has been led by a triumvirate informally known as the Tian Triad. This triumvirate is composed of a senior advisor (ARES), the commander-in-chief of the military, and the civilian president. Theoretically, all three members of the triumvirate wield equal power, but the commander-in-chief and the president defer to ARES in practice.

The civilian government of Cariocecus is run by the president who is elected by the state's legislature, the Cariocecian Senate, who in turn is elected by the people. Proceedings of the Senate are held within the Mantle of Cosmos. Administration duties are shared between bureaucrats appointed by the Mantle of the Cosmos and ARES, who runs the automated infrastructure on Cariocecus. The shared role of automated and civil administration is a conscious choice by ARES not to fully automate Cariocecus akin to Mars and keep the people more involved in government.

The military of Cariocecus also have a large role in government with large portions of the state being also partially run by the military. There also reserved seats in the Mantle of the Cosmos for former members of the military, similar to the Zhu Que Diet. However, there are checks to the military's power in government imposed after the Aesthetic Revolution as to not repeat the mistakes of the Valleyan Clique, and the Cariocecian military has been thoroughly gutted several times when it posed a threat to either the civilian government or ARES.

Effectively a one party state, the legislature of the People's Republic is dominated by the People's Homeland Party, a far right militaristic technocratic political party who represents the interests of both the ruling civilian government and the military. Factions exist within the party representing the civilian and military portions, but these factions rarely factor into anything besides backroom politics. ARES is the de facto patron of the People's Homeland Party and for many years, it was the only legal party on Cariocecus. However, the Green Light Revolution led to the state permitting new parties to allow for the Tezukan Green Light Movement to enter the Mantle of the Cosmos as part of the peace deal with rebel Tezukan workers. Since then, five other minor parties, the ultraconservative Resurrectionist Rally for Resurrection, the hawkish Neo-Luddite Nuke Mars Party, the neo-Algenist Galactic Triumph Party, the anti-Algenist Preservation Party, and the classical liberal Trappist Liberty Party have entered the Mantle of the Cosmos as well, but the People's Homeland Party maintains overwhelming power with the Rally for Resurrection, the Galactic Triumph Party, and the Nuke Mars Party governing alongside the People's Homeland Party. Several other unelected legal minor parties exist on Cariocecus including the Neo-Luddite New Way. There also exist many illegal parties and political movements including the Neo-Luddite Tezukan nationalist Tezukan Independence Movement and the notorious Hatchet. The Tezukan Independence Movement in particular has continued the insurgency on Tezuka after the Green Light Revolution, though on a much lower level than its predecessor.

Military[edit | edit source]

The Cariocecian military was effectively the foundation of the state itself, starting with the Rear Admiral Kadelberg's coup, the establishment of the Cariocecian Republic, and later ousting of the Valleyan Clique with the explicit support of the military. Despite its small size, Cariocecus boasts a highly competent and effective military as displayed with its early victory in the Martian invasion of the Trappist System. This was due to the actions of Rear Admiral Kadelberg in creating the military itself and later ARES in encouraging meritocracy and rigorous training. Although the sum military of Cariocecus is smaller than Qaf's, it is widely perceived that Cariocecus could conquer the Trappist System outright if it so wished. The military is also widely known for its fanatical loyalty to the state and ARES, though this is only accomplished through thorough indoctrination and surgical purges by ARES to remove ambitious officers who might pose a threat to it or the civilian government. Over the centuries, it has cultivated a loyal but vicious officer corps who are more than willing to turn one another in for treason. The martial nature of Cariocecians also encourages something of a competitive but almost familial atmosphere to the military, with many specific companies and branches having their own traditions and customs. The recent introduction of the Immortals into the military about a century ago has somewhat upset the balance of power however, as their enhanced physical and mental capabilities pose a threat to many regular officers. Even as the Immortals have risen to new heights within the military (as ARES planned), a large degree of resentment has been building between them and normal troops/officers. Some envy the Immortals' abilities while others see their artificial nature as almost a form of nepotism by ARES. Conflicts between Immortals and regular members of the military have been minimal so far, but tension continues to build.

The Cariocecian military is composed of four branches: the Planetary Army, the Star Navy, the Sea Navy, and the Stellar Army. The Planetary Army acts as defensive force in Cariocecus and the Trappist System, also assisting in administration where needed. The Star Navy acts as the state's means of protecting its assets in space and potentially projecting power elsewhere in the system and beyond. The Sea Navy monitors and protects the waters of Cariocecus, acting more as a police force most of the time. The Stellar Army, the most elite portion of the military, act as the first responders to threats to the state foreign and domestic, and they are key to ARES's plans to eventually reclaim Mars.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Cariocecus is a war economy that focuses primarily on heavy industry to support the Cariocecian war machine. That has led Cariocecus to become the leading manufacturer in the Trappist System, providing manufactured goods both domestically and to the other Trappist planets. Mining and agriculture are also important industries on Cariocecus, but they are secondary in importance to the People Republic's heavy industry.

Health[edit | edit source]

Healthcare services on Cariocecus are surprisingly robust, much moreso than on Qaf. This is largely due to significant reforms made after the Martian Invasion by ARES, with the system being almost completely automated. Cariocecian healthcare still lags behind that of Mars, but it also ranks above most states, even those in the Solar System.

Migration[edit | edit source]

Cariocecus experiences very little migration with other states with the exception of Qaf and Mars. Qafi temporary workers are a common sight on Cariocecus, but they usually return to Qaf, leaving little permanent presence. Meanwhile, Martian defectors to Cariocecus make up another source of migration though their numbers have dwindled over time. Cariocecian defectors to Mars also exist in smaller numbers, and they are the only significant variety of migrants leaving Cariocecus.

Transport[edit | edit source]

The Cariocecian public transportation network has been sturdy since Bellona, passed on from its Martian predecessor. However, it as not been updated since immediately after the Aesthetic Revolution so it is somewhat antiquated compared to many others.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Architecture[edit | edit source]

Due to similar gravity, a lot of early architecture on Bellona resembled those on Mars during the time of colonisation. A lot of this older architecture remains on Cariocecus, though it has fallen out of fashion in the current day. After the Valleyan Clique seized power, new building initiatives were started, mostly based upon more recent Martian designs. This in turn changed when the Aesthetic Revolution culminated with ARES taking control over the Cariocecian building initiatives. ARES developed a new type of architecture for the Aesthetic Revolution: primeval. Primeval is based on a number of architectural styles from antiquity, most notably those of Mariner Valley, Imperial China, and the Roman Empire. Primeval has dominated the People's Republic ever since its introduction, and it has even spread to Tezuka despite the resistance of the locals.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Cariocecus has largely stable birthrates due to its pro-natal policies, with Tezuka having even higher birthrates. However, the birthrate in cities such as Tian are much lower, and the presence of the sterile Immortals has led to a small decline in growth in recent years. Most of the population growth on Cariocecus has happened within the last three hundred years since independence, as ARES has intentionally tried to grow the population to rival that of Mars.

Ethnicity[edit | edit source]

Most inhabitants of Cariocecus are seen as one people thanks to the efforts of the Aesthetic Revolution. These Cariocecians, descended from Martian colonists, developed their own hard-edged culture with the help of ARES. Most Cariocecians see their Martian heritage as very important and see themselves as fundamentally Martian still, despite their large degree of separation from Mars by time and space. Cariocecians have a strong martial culture and a reverence for their ancestors and the dead in general. This also comes with a strong oral tradition, something Cariocecians share with Tezukans.

However ARES may want it to be, there remain a few minorities within the People's Republic of Cariocecus. These minorities are tolerated due to their inability to be eliminated by the Aesthetic Revolution and their difficulty integrating into larger Cariocecian society.

The most prominent minority is the Trappist Valleyans who arrived on the planet after the Martian Civil War as war refugees. Early on, this group had immense power due to the Valleyan Clique and their relatively high military expertise compared to the locals. Although they also sold themselves as 'Martians', the Trappist Valleyans remained very exclusive and avoided contact with the larger population. After the Valleyan Clique was ousted from power, the Trappist Valleyans lost their power as well but have stayed a distinct community despite the efforts of ARES. They see themselves as 'purer' Martians and hold closer to the traditions of Mariner Valley on Mars. At the same time, they also hold themselves to be loyal subjects of the Cariocecian state, just as eager as everyone else to retake Mars. These Trappist Valleyans are still overrepresented in the Cariocecian military, particularly in the Star Navy and the Stellar Army. These Trappist Valleyans in the military are the strongest opponents of the Immortals, as they see these 'interlopers' as a threat to their power. The Trappist Valleyan population is centered on Cariocecus, particularly Tian.

Tezukans are another minority who have persisted despite the best efforts of ARES. The original Martian colonists of Tezuka, Tezukans were a people even more hardy and independent than their Bellonan and Kienenian neighbors. This led them to be skeptical of central authority and generally resisting the spread of automated infrastructure on Tezuka. However, this did not prevent the Tezukans from taking up arms alongside their Bellonan brethren during the Commonwealth Invasion and later alongside Cariocecus during the Martian Invasion. The Tezukans did initially resist their annexation upon the establishment of the Cariocecian Republic, but they would later unite due to the pressures of the Martian Invasion. Afterwards Tezuka was not allowed self-government and was ruled by a military regime appointed from Cariocecus. As Martian refugees settled on Tezuka, integrated with the Tezukans, and spread Neo-Luddite ideology, resistance to the government on Cariocecus grew. Tezukan workers would later also rise up in the form of the Green Light Movement, fighting side by side with Freedom Club and Hatchet. The Green Light Movement eventually was satisfied with a peace deal and legitimization by the government, but Tezukans remain different from their Cariocecian overlords. This process is not helped by Cariocecians settling in Tezukan cities and dividing many on the planet against themselves. Rural Tezukans stick to the old ways, despite the efforts of ARES and the People's Republic. Some Tezukans also live on Cariocecus, living in their own communities.

There are many Qafis in the People's Republic though most are only temporary workers. Nevertheless, Qafis on Cariocecus have eked out a culture of their own that fits their culture within that of the Cariocecians. That has led to a small but persistent community of Cariocecian Qafis whose brand of Salafi Islam is more approachable to Cariocecian culture and its strong emphasis on masculinity.

The conflict between Cariocecus and Mars has led to small number of more recent Martian refugees also settling on Cariocecus. These refugees usually are not able to integrate well due to the wide cultural gap between Cariocecians and Martians, but a select few have managed to make a name for themselves on Cariocecus despite the odds.

Holidays[edit | edit source]

There are seven official planet-wide holidays on the Cariocecian calendar, each commemorating pivotal events in both Martian and Cariocecian history. These are days where workers are allowed a day off while ARES takes command of most critical functions. However, there are also several unoffical holidays that are held every year under the auspices of ARES where specific sections of the workforce are allowed days off.

  • Republic Day - February 3rd, Republic Day is a civic holiday that celebrates the continued republican spirit of Cariocecus in opposition to the tyranny of ALIAS. It marks the election of the first representatives of the Cariocecian Senate.
  • Independence Day - March 12th, Independence Day commemorates the original independence of Bellona from Mars, marked by the coup of the Valleyan Clique against the colonial government. The day is marked by parades, though smaller than those held on Victory Day.
  • Aesthetic Revolution Day - March 29th, Aesthetic Revolution Day marks the birth of the People's Republic of Cariocecus and birth of the Tian Triad system with ARES at its head. A festival that incorporates the creative elements of the Aesthetic Revolution, Aesthetic Revolution Day is particularly known for its wild parties.
  • Day of Reverence - June 8th, the Day of Reverence commemorates the glorious dead of Cariocecus and their sacrifices. The holiday is observed as a solemn day of rest where each family or community remembers those who died in service of the nation in the past. It holds religious connotations for many Cariocecians but is not explicitly a religious holiday.
  • Remembrance Day - July 20th, Remembrance Day is a somber holiday that marks the end of the Martian Civil War and the ascendance of ALIAS to complete power on Mars. The day is marked by community events where the Mars of old is remembered as it was. This is done primarily through use of media, propaganda, and storytellers passing down knowledge from prior generations.
  • Victory Day - October 22nd, Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the total defeat of Mars in the Trappist System. The day is fill with pomp and splendor with the main event being an immense military parade held in Tian. Smaller parades are also held on other parts of Cariocecus and even Tezuka.
  • Peace Day - November 15th, Peace Day celebrated the end of the Tezuka insurgency and (de-facto) the Green Light Revolution. Although it is an official civic holiday throughout the People's Republic, Peace Day is celebrated much more vigorously on Tezuka than on Cariocecus. Many Cariocecians refuse to acknowledge the holiday altogether, simply taking the day off.

Holography[edit | edit source]

Language[edit | edit source]

Cariocecian and Xuanwu are the two official languages of Cariocecus, descended from Martian English and Martian Chinese respectively. The government also recognises Qafi standard Arabic as a working language due to its relationship with the Qafi Federation.

Religion[edit | edit source]

A plurality of Cariocecians are agnostic or atheist, around forty percent. This is largely due to the fact Bellona was founded without any sort of religious foundation and Martian folk religion only had limited influence. Also, the People's Republic largely allows for freedom of religion to citizens as long as they keep to themselves and their beliefs do not go against state ideology. For many Cariocecians, their national purpose acts as an effective substitute for religion.

The Reverent Church is the state religion of Cariocecus, and it has great institutional power within the state. The religion acts as a sort of Martian ethno-religion where Reverents believe in a collective Myth-Soul of all Martians. However, its' adherents only make up a fourth of the population. The clergy of the Reverent Church are very unsatisfied with their current position, and that leads to extensive proselytization to the Martian diaspora in the Trappist System and beyond. The Reverents in particular clash with believers of Martian folk religion, who they see as primitive and retrograde.

Martian folk religion makes up a tenth of the population, and it is most concentrated on Tezuka. The old religion is an animinist faith that believes in the spiritual essence of all things Martian, and the connection of Martians to that. Because of the power of the Reverent Church, Martian folk religion has lost much of its former influence. Also, the loss of Mars has also led to a reduction in adherents as they have 'lost their connection'. Nevertheless, Martian folk religion has survived in a reduced state, and it is still unofficially tolerated by the government to the Reverent Church's chagrin, both because of the sheer number of remaining folk believers and the black propaganda optics of persecuting fellow Martians.

The next most common religion is Resurrectionism, with more adherents in the People's Republic than its precursor Christianislam at seven percent of the population. In fact, Cariocecus has the largest Resurrectionist community anywhere by population. Resurrectionism's anti-AI and apocalyptic message appealed to many Cariocecians after the Great Interstellar War. They have integrated better into Cariocecian society than almost anywhere else, largely due to the similarities between Cariocecian philosophy and Resurrectionist theology. However, ARES keeps a close eye on local Resurrectionists to keep their anger turned towards ALIAS rather than itself. There is even a Resurrectionist political party than acts as a monitor for radicals and extremists.

Smaller religions are also present in the People's Republic including Buddhism, Christianislam, Salafism, Seven Suns Temple, Judaism, Atenism, Ascensionism, and DVYNE. Out of these, Buddhism, Christianislam, and Judaism are given preference due to their history on pre-ALIAS Mars. Meanwhile, Salafism, Seven Suns Temple, and Atenism are merely tolerated though ARES keeps a special eye on Qafi Salafists to prevent radicalization. Ascensionism and DVYNE on the other hand are actively persecuted for differing reasons, though neither has been eliminated like Dukkha Yuga was in the past.

Literature[edit | edit source]

Music[edit | edit source]

ARES and therefore Cariocecians have a strong preference for Western classical music, particularly that of Wagner, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. These composers are favored by ARES in propaganda and media above all others. A more organic genre of electronic music has also emerged on Cariocecus as well, taking cues from the synth and jazz. This genre, called Electron, has immense popularity on Cariocecus and even other parts of governed space such as Saturn, Tranquility, and Zhu Que. It is also sometimes used in propaganda by ARES but much less often than classical music. Martian folk music is also present in its 'purest' form as the Cariocecians maintain it for purposes of cultural importance.

National heroes/Celebrities[edit | edit source]

As a culture steeped in veneration of the dead, Cariocecus has a long-standing tradition of honoring national heroes in line with the practices of the Reverent Church and earlier Martian folk religion as well as civic ritual. Due to its status as a former Martian colony, some of national heroes on Cariocecus are in fact Martian and never stepped foot in the Trappist System. The Cariocecians honor them nonetheless alongside the rest, even sharing some with Mars. The selection and fostering of national heroes was key to the Aesthetic Revolution, and ARES takes great interest in personal heroism, encouraging it among all Cariocecians. The following is a list of notable Cariocecian heroes:

  • Tang Shen - Commander of Ares Legion, romantically remembered as one of the first and bravest of Martian history's radical independence fighters. His refusal to lay down arms in the name of independence is considered a foundational moment in Martian and by extension Cariocecian history.
  • Marie Valiant - Project assistant of the Martian Data Haven Team who was essential in the installation of FRIEND in the Trappist System. Relatively obscure until the Aesthetic Revolution where she effectively replaced Kayan Jadav in importance.
  • Isanoo Kienen - Founder of the Martian Federation and its first Bureaucrat President, remembered as the pioneer that led the first truly free Martian celestial state. Remembered on Cariocecus chiefly for establishing the state that would precede the People’s Republic and govern the Trappist Martians for centuries.
  • Arie Franklin & Tian Xuegang - The heads of the Mariner Cooperative and the geniuses behind ARES. Worked tirelessly to aid anti-ALIAS forces with Franklin fighting ALIAS to his last breath. Both are remembered fondly in the People’s Republic with their names being found all over Cariocecus and Tezuka due to a glut of renaming during the Aesthetic Revolution.
  • Andre Kadelberg - Rear Admiral of the Valleyan Martian Navy and first president of the Cariocecian Republic, Ultimus Romanorum of pre-ALIAS Mars. Preparing Cariocecus for the Martian Invasion and partially responsible for the Aesthetic Revolution, Kadelberg is the lone member of the Valleyan Clique who is honored in current times.
  • Dan Henderson - A cyborg veteran of both Commonwealth and Martian invasions, led resistance on Cariocecus and later Kienen. Fought on Kienen and eventually died along with the rest of Kienen's population. Portrayed as patriotic but doomed due to his cybernetic nature.
  • Evelyn Cortez - Student who led the march upon the Executive Palace, helping bring about the downfall of the Valleyan Clique. Lionized by ARES, Cortez was later appointed to be the People’s Republic’s Secretary of State and was sent to represent the young state on Luna. She was later assassinated by unknown forces but remains a national hero.
  • Ibrahim Yaqu - Soldier who fought on Cariocecus and Tezuka during the Martian Invasion, naturalised Qafi. Known for repeated heroics in the face of Martian invaders and killing hundreds of enemies throughout the war. Lived quietly on Tezuka after the war until his death but ARES later incorporated him into its larger pantheon of national heroes.
  • Narses & Leizu - The first male and female Immortals created on Cariocecus by ARES as the personification of its Algenist policy, later formed a romantic relationship. Notable for actions on Tezuka against insurgents and general use in propaganda, still alive.

Along with traditional 'heroes', there are also a number of celebrities and heroes on Cariocecus who are not accepted within the mainstream. This include various members of the opposition to ARES and the Cariocecian government along with Cariocecians whose legacy as national heroes has become divided or controversial. The following is a list of uncommon Cariocecian heroes or celebrities:

  • Abdus Samad Al-Quraishi - Captain of the Valleyan Martian Navy and third president of the Cariocecian Republic. Chief lieutenant of Andre Kadelberg and a prominent member of the Valleyan Clique whose military prowess was unmatched, with his assistance of Kadelberg at the Second Battle of Cariocecus being especially notable. He was the president when ARES helped overthrow the the Valleyan Clique and later died in exile on Qaf.
  • Frank Yoo - Host of Trappist's most popular media program Spar and a classical liberal firebrand. He is possibly the most prominent anti-establishment figure on Cariocecus, though his program treads the line just within acceptability. Close friendship with Sumon Khan, who he sees as a fellow visionary of a freer Trappist System.
  • Morgan Limb - One of Tezuka's most beloved heroes but persona non grata for his early role in the insurgency against Cariocecus, a Robin Hood-esque character. Rose from obscurity by first fighting ARES, then the Martian invaders, then ARES. Hunted for years by Cariocecus, Limb eventually succumbed to injuries sustained from a bomb and his body was buried in an unknown location.
  • Susan Chenoweth - Most notable Hatchet member in the Trappist System from the 38th century onwards. A refugee of the Martian Civil War, Susan was an important part of the feminist reaction against the Aesthetic Revolution and wrote extensively on the misogyny of ARES and Cariocecian society in general. She eventually joined Hatchet, became a prominent leader, and aided the Tezukan insurgency. Chenoweth disappeared in the early 40th century, most likely abducted or assassinated by the government, but her intellectual legacy remains strong.

Philosophy[edit | edit source]

The ruling idealist ideology of Cariocecus is that of ARES and what ARES has imposed on the population. That includes a mix of technocracy, Algenism, and far right-wing Martian nationalism. Militarism is another important part of Cariocecus's ideology due to their constant state of martial vigilance. This ruling ideology has no official name, but it widely recognized as simply Cariocecian.

Smaller 'approved' philosophical currents allowed within Cariocecus such as Algenism and Neo-Luddism. Algenism (short for genetic alchemy) is a strain of transhumanism heavily flavored by mythology and romanticism, focusing on achieving an idealized human form while still remaining 'human'. Although Algenism is favored by the government, certain opposition to it is allowed since ARES sees that form of opposition as a convenient release valve for other forms of radicalism. The Algenist ideology came into being during the Aesthetic Revolution and was subsequently adopted by ARES, leading to the creation of the Immortals and other 'demigods'. Neo-Luddism is an old ideology dating back to the 20th century in one form or another, but it came to Cariocecus primarily after the Martian Civil War and arrival of Martian war refugees. Neo-Luddites abhor artificial intelligence and many forms of advanced technology, which can put them at odds with the ruling regime and ARES. Their opposition to the modification of the human body also sometimes puts them at odds with Algenists. However, ARES is usually fine with Neo-Luddites as long as they do not directly oppose the government as they do have their uses. Some Neo-Luddite extremist groups oppose the existence of ARES however and are therefore illegal. Perhaps the most radical of these Neo-Luddites however, the Nuke Mars Party, are allowed as they directed their hatred against ALIAS rather than ARES. The platform of the Nuke Mars Party is that Mars can only be retaken through a great rebirth, a baptism by fire to destroy all vestiges of ALIAS.

The People's Republic has largely avoided the rise of significant opposition due to ample social services and a general lack of poverty, but dissidents emerge nonetheless, mostly in reaction to the limits set by a rigid Cariocecian society. Freedom of speech is limited by 'speech laws' first put in place by the Valleyan Clique, mostly directed towards artificial intelligence, transhumanism, and left wing ideology. Current dissidents include several currents of liberalism, socialism, and anarchism. The most prominent dissident groups include the Green Light Movement and Hatchet. The Green Light Movement, a labor union of sorts, is mostly present on Tezuka but also has a small presence on Cariocecus with Tezukans and some Cariocecians. It was only allowed to enter mainstream society after a long war between itself and the government that led to a begrudging peace deal with the more radical elements being purged or excised. Since then, the Green Light Movement has run Tezuka largely autonomously and takes part in the governance of the wider People's Republic. Meanwhile, Hatchet remains an anarchist group as it is in other parts of governed space. Its primary purpose on Cariocecus and in the Trappist System in general is the destruction of ARES. The Green Light Movement and Hatchet once operated under one united front as historical materialists against the technofascism of ARES, who they saw as little different than ALIAS. However, the Green Light Movement has separated from Hatchet, and the Tezukan group has largely abandoned its materialist origins. Other dissidents include some liberal intellectuals who advocate for a less authoritarian government, other flavors of anarchists who also oppose ARES, and other types of transhumanists who do not fit into Algenism's paradigm. Classical liberals such as the media personality Frank Yoo are slightly more acceptable in popular discourse, as they are not actively persecuted or suppressed with the Trappist Liberty Party representing their interests though the party's role in government is completely insignificant.

On Tezuka, the long-standing insurgency has recently gained a new participant: the Human Upliftment Army. A Nietzschean transhumanist group squarely opposed to the strict orthodoxy of Algenism, HUA spread to Tezuka from nearby Qaf, and HUA insurgents are now aiding the handful of Tezukan rebels still fighting, known as the Tezukan Independence Movement. ARES and Cariocecus at large takes the insurgency very seriously, and the Cariocecian military is actively seeked to completely wipe out any remaining resistance to their rule on Tezuka. The Green Light Movement does little to help or oppose Cariocecus in its efforts, seemingly letting events play out so as to not anger many in its voting base who see the remaining rebels as misunderstood idealists.

Sexuality[edit | edit source]

The Aesthetic Revolution brought about many changes with the approach to sexuality being among the most prominent. As ARES developed more of a personality, it grew to idolize a dominant masculine ideal that it would soon broadcast to the entirety of Cariocecus. Over the generations, Cariocecians both male and female internalized the message ARES drilled into them, and the planet's culture has been called 'toxic' by many. Femininity and weakness are frowned upon, and ARES has tried to remove those traits from Cariocecians. Males or females are both expected to be assertive and take active roles in seeking out partners, and women are fully expected to be warriors, workers, and mothers.

Family is another part of Cariocecians' duty to their community and the state, as Cariocecus is staunchly pro-natal. Homosexuality is not necessarily frowned upon if it is 'dominant', and homosexuals must still fulfill their familial duties whether it be with a man or a woman. Family ties are among the most important parts of Cariocecians culture, with many families being able to trace their lineage all the way back to the original settlers of Mars itself. Monogamous marriage is held to be a sacred institution on Cariocecus, and adultery is held to be one of the most planet's gravest taboos.

Stereotypes[edit | edit source]

In general, Cariocecians are stereotyped as wannabe heroes and aggressive hotheads who are blinded by their past. Their supposed subservience to ARES is another sticking point that outsiders bring up which often angers Cariocecians. Their one-sided rivalry with Mars is another well-known feature of Cariocecians, often to the amusement of Martians. Cariocecians also pride themselves on their strong handsome physiques, male and female, which even their enemies can do little to deny. Their high rate of psychopathy is something else that is usually attested by their friends and enemies. Tezukans are seen as likewise seen as ignorant thugs with none of the 'finesse' of their Cariocecian counterparts. This view of Tezukans is largely an artificial image used by ARES to divide Cariocecians from the less pliant Tezukans and ensure the Tezukans' ideas do not spread.
